BTS is set to honor its cultural heritage with the release of their new album, ARIRANG. The group recently unveiled an animated trailer that explores their contemporary influence in the Western world through the lens of historical events.
Released on Thursday, March 12, the video begins with a significant statement: “This video was inspired by the story of seven young Koreans as documented in The Washington Post on May 8, 1896 (‘Seven Koreans at Howard’), some of whom captured the first known audio recordings of Koreans in Washington, D.C.”
The trailer aims to reinterpret this historical narrative, stating, “As a modern reimagining, this work draws upon the profound cultural significance of these historical records, which preserve the authentic voices of young Korean men and the first-ever recording of ‘Arirang.’” It also notes that the animation may not strictly adhere to factual events.
The visuals transition to portray seven men joyfully sailing to the United States, performing for an audience outside Howard University. The scene then jumps forward 117 years to 2013, highlighting BTS on stage in front of thousands—demonstrating how the band’s rise in the K-pop scene parallels the achievements of those seven pioneers. The accompanying music shifts from a reflective piano melody to an upbeat EDM rhythm, hinting at content from the upcoming album.
“Every story begins with a song,” text at the bottom of the screen asserts. “When the world feels heavy, when your heart feels light, what is your love song?”
This teaser arrives just a week before the album’s March 20 release. Concurrently, BTS revealed the business-themed cover art for ARIRANG, showcasing members RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook in tailored suits, gazing stoically at the camera.
Since announcing the album title in January, the band has expressed a desire to pay homage to their roots. A press release elaborated that “Arirang” is a traditional Korean folk song associated with themes of connection, distance, and reunion.
Described as “a deeply reflective body of work,” the album will delve into BTS’ identity and cultural foundations.
