Bruce Campbell Shares How His Cancer Diagnosis Won’t Affect His Latest Film: “Focusing on This Movie Is What’s Important”
Following his recent cancer diagnosis, Bruce Campbell is focused on promoting his latest film.
The horror movie icon, who wrote, directed, and stars in Ernie & Emma, underscored that his “priority is this movie,” despite learning he has a type of cancer that, while “treatable,” is not “curable.”
“It doesn’t change anything for me,” he told USA Today. “It makes you prioritize 100 percent, and for me, the priority is this movie.”
In Ernie & Emma, Campbell portrays a widowed pear salesman who embarks on a journey to scatter his wife’s ashes, reflecting on cherished memories from their marriage along the way.
Campbell expressed enthusiasm about the film, which he produced alongside his wife, Ida Gearon. “My wife and I have never made a movie together before, and this is the most exciting thing ever. We finally got to do something that has no outside influence. We made it in our own little bubble,” he stated.
Earlier this month, Campbell announced his cancer diagnosis, noting that work will need to “take a back seat to treatment.” He mentioned, “There are several cons this year summer [sic] that I have to cancel. Big regrets on my part. Treatment needs and professional obligations don’t always go hand-in-hand.”
“That’s about it. I’m not trying to enlist sympathy—or advice—I just want to get ahead of this information in case false information gets out (which it will),” Campbell continued. “Fear not, I am a tough old son-of-a-bitch and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while. As always, you’re the greatest fans in the world and I hope to see you soon!”
