Brooke Shields Shares Insights on the Emotional Gravesite Scene in ‘When Calls the Heart’ and What’s in Store for Charlotte
Brooke Shields’ Emotional Return to When Calls the Heart
Brooke Shields made a poignant return to the Hallmark Channel series When Calls the Heart as Charlotte Thornton, delivering a performance that was both emotional and impactful. A particularly significant scene involving a gravesite visit marked a crucial turning point for the show.
In an exclusive interview, Shields, 60, reflected on the changes to Charlotte’s family following the episode that aired on March 8. "It’s a new chapter for everybody," she remarked, hinting at the evolving relationships within the story.
The episode featured a pivotal moment when Mountee Nathan Grant, played by Kevin McGarry, sought Charlotte’s blessing to propose to her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Thornton, portrayed by Erin Krakow. Charlotte approved but noted that Nathan needed the blessing of her late son, Jack Thornton, portrayed by Daniel Lissing. Together, they visited Jack’s grave, a moment that marked Charlotte’s first visit since his death in Season 5.
Shields expressed her emotional response upon reading the script, saying, “First of all, I was like, ‘Oh God, I gotta cry.’ Sort of like, ‘Oh man.’” However, she found a sense of calm during the scene at the gravesite, feeling grateful for a storyline that allowed her character to confront her grief. “I was relieved that they were able to write a storyline that encompassed [Nathan’s] gift to her, her gift to herself, to be able to mourn her son,” she explained.
During the graveside conversation, Charlotte tells Jack, “You’re with us, Jack. You’re in our hearts and you always will be.” This moment not only signifies the closing of Jack and Elizabeth’s chapter but also heralds new beginnings for Charlotte and her family. Shields noted, “I think that chapter will never be closed for a mother, but I think that [it] gave room and freedom for whatever new types of relationships to be formed and nurtured.”
Looking ahead, Shields expressed her hope to return for Nathan and Elizabeth’s wedding. She humorously remarked on her character’s current situation, noting, “We hope she makes it home safely. We always have to worry about that.” The actress hinted that Charlotte’s role within a new blended family dynamic remains uncertain, stating, “This right now is in sort of a very neutral way for everybody to sort of ask different questions instead of not knowing the answers.”
With Charlotte’s future in When Calls the Heart still up in the air, Shields remains optimistic about her character’s journey. “They haven’t told me anything,” she admitted, acknowledging that upcoming developments will largely depend on the choices made within the story. “I think it’s going to be based on what happens with Nathan and Elizabeth,” she concluded.
When Calls the Heart airs on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on Hallmark Channel.
