Bleecker Street and LD Entertainment Team Up for West End Live Version of ‘Hadestown’
Bleecker Street and LD Entertainment Join Forces for ‘Hadestown’ Film Release
Bleecker Street’s event cinema division, Crosswalk, has partnered with LD Entertainment to secure North American and English-speaking rights for the filmed version of the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 24, with a UK date to be announced soon.
This production marks the first in a planned series of Broadway live captures set for release by Crosswalk and LD. The partnership follows Crosswalk’s recent success with the concert film Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience, which grossed $7.2 million in the U.S. Previous releases by Bleecker Street include a live rendition of Waitress, which earned $5.4 million during its debut across 1,214 locations.
Hadestown, created by Anaïs Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin, won eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical, and claimed the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album in 2020. This filmed rendition, shot in London and directed by Brett Sullivan of Steam Motion and Sound, features the original Broadway cast, including Reeve Carney as Orpheus, André De Shields as Hermes, Amber Gray as Persephone, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, and Patrick Page as Hades.
Originally conceived as a small indie theater project in Vermont, Hadestown evolved into a celebrated musical that blends modern American folk with New Orleans jazz while telling the intertwined love stories of Orpheus and Eurydice, as well as Hades and Persephone. The musical is currently in its seventh year on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre, having also enjoyed a three-year run in the West End after returning to London following its 2018 engagement at the National Theatre.
Bleecker Street CEO Kent Sanderson expressed enthusiasm about the endeavor, stating, “We are thrilled to be embarking on our second Crosswalk release, and couldn’t be happier to be partnered with our friends at LD. Hadestown has touched the hearts of so many people around the world, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share it even more widely with this beautifully accomplished film.”
Producer Mara Isaacs echoed this sentiment: “We are eager to share this iconic performance of Hadestown, featuring a unique combination of our original Broadway cast and West End company, made for the big screen. A great deal of love and care has gone into capturing the show on film, allowing it to live beyond the stage and reach new audiences around the world for years to come.”
The film will also feature Bella Brown, Madeline Charlemagne, and Allie Daniel as the Fates, alongside Lauren Azania, Tiago Dhondt Bamberger, Ryesha Higgs, Waylon Jacobs, and Christopher Short as Workers. Producers of the film include Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy.
