Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni Settlement Talks Fall Through; Trial Scheduled for Next Month
Trial Looms for Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni Amid Defamation Claims
Actress Blake Lively and actor Justin Baldoni are headed to trial regarding Lively’s claims of retaliation and defamation, despite efforts by a federal judge to facilitate a settlement. The latest developments unfolded during a conference call with Magistrate Judge Sarah L. Cave, where lawyers for both parties discussed their clients’ positions on a potential settlement.
However, the meeting yielded no progress. Just days prior, Judge Lewis Liman dismissed ten of Lively’s thirteen claims against Baldoni and his team from Wayfarer Studios. Following individual conference calls—scheduled for 3 PM ET for Team Lively and 4 PM ET for Team Baldoni—both sides rejected any agreement to avoid the trial set for May 18, with Judge Cave’s attempts to find common ground proving futile.
Lively faced a setback when Judge Liman’s ruling on April 2 effectively reduced her case, dismissing the sexual harassment claims on jurisdictional and contractual grounds rather than on their merits. The focus now lies on allegations surrounding a purported online smear campaign orchestrated by Baldoni’s public relations team in advance of the release of the Sony-distributed film It Ends With Us. Lively has indicated that these astroturfing allegations are central to her case.
Earlier on the same day, Lively reinforced her stance by sharing strong statements from the previous week. She urged her followers not to be sidetracked by what she termed a “digital soap opera,” pledging to continue her fight against systemic injustices affecting victims.
Attempts to resolve the legal dispute outside of court have been ongoing since December 2024. Last year, Judge Liman directed both parties to engage in settlement discussions, which included multiple meetings, notably a face-to-face confrontation in a Manhattan courtroom. However, Lively and Baldoni’s negotiations, similar to Monday’s discussions, ended unsuccessfully, as noted by Baldoni’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, who confirmed in February that efforts for an agreement had proven fruitless.
With the trial date approaching, the stakes are high for both actors as they prepare to present their cases in court.
