Birmingham Boys’ Soccer Moves On to the City Section Open Division Final
Birmingham High Advances to Championship After Unusual Playoff Developments
In a remarkable twist in City Section soccer, Birmingham High, a six-time champion, secured a spot in the Open Division boys’ final after defeating Venice 6-0 on Thursday. This win follows Birmingham’s unexpected elimination in the first round of playoffs just two weeks prior.
The Patriots received a second chance to compete for the championship after semifinalists Marquez and South East were disqualified for utilizing an ineligible player. Consequently, the City Section arranged for Birmingham and Venice — both first-round losers — to face off for the opportunity to challenge rival El Camino Real in the final set for Saturday at 6 p.m.
“It’s been a crazy week,” remarked Birmingham goalkeeper Alexis Villagran. “We’re blessed for the opportunity.”
Birmingham coach Gus Villalobos had intended to collect his players’ uniforms this week, effectively concluding their season. Now, his team stands just one win away from claiming another City title. Despite their morale, players appeared fatigued, having been unable to practice since their loss on February 6. Villagran was permitted to participate in the game after taking part in a club match, as the state CIF approved a waiver under the circumstances.
Robert Mejia, who scored two penalty goals in the match, has tallied 26 goals this season. A first-year player for Birmingham after transitioning from the L.A. Galaxy youth academy, Mejia acknowledged that coaches in both club and high school settings emphasized the importance of adhering to CIF regulations. “We all know the rules,” he stated.
The recent playoff scenario has been further complicated by violations of CIF bylaw 600, resulting in five City Section teams forfeiting games due to players’ participation in outside leagues during their high school season. City Section commissioner Vicky Lagos has been tasked with replacing teams affected by these violations. Recent communications indicated that Gardena in Division III would forfeit, allowing Sun Valley Magnet to advance to the finals. On Thursday, Lagos noted that Garfield, a finalist in City Division II, had been cleared to compete against Santee.
Birmingham initiated a six-goal surge in the game against Venice after a scoreless first half. Sophomore Hayden Quiambao ignited the scoring with a header shortly after halftime, marking the beginning of an explosive performance by the team.
