Bernie Kopell Shares Memories of a Harsh Review Before Love Boat Found Success

Bernie Kopell, known for his role in the iconic series The Love Boat, recently shared insights about the show’s rocky beginnings during an event with fellow cast members on Princess Cruises. At 92, Kopell expressed pride in the long-lasting impact of the beloved series, but recalled the challenges it faced before gaining success.
Reflecting on the show’s inception, he noted that it took three pilot episodes to secure a green light, and initial reviews were far from encouraging. “The first review we got from this a—— at the LA Times said, ‘It’s going to sink like the Titanic,'” he remarked, highlighting the skepticism surrounding the show.
Despite the initial doubts, The Love Boat has since accumulated a devoted fan base. Kopell mentioned receiving heartfelt letters from fans all over the world, including a recent letter from Germany expressing admiration for the show.

Kopell described his initial audition for the role of Dr. Adam Bricker as a crucial turning point. He felt fortunate to have landed the part after a long wait, recalling the moment when his agent delivered the news: “[He said,] ‘You got the f—ing part!’ Oh, yipee!”
Throughout the years, Kopell has found fulfillment in the warmth extended to him by fans, noting a memorable encounter with a doctor who complimented his portrayal of a caring physician. “You stand by your patients, and you’re kind to them and you’re helpful and you’re competent,” the doctor told him—a testament to the show’s lasting legacy.

During his time on the show, Kopell developed his character with thoughtful consideration. “There were some late-night meetings about how to name this guy,” he recounted with a laugh, explaining how the character’s name evolved into Dr. Bricker. “The guy chases the ladies. He’s a bit of a pricker, isn’t it? I said, ‘Well, we can’t call him that. We have to change the P to a B,’” he said, reflecting on the creative process.
The camaraderie among the cast members remains a cherished aspect of Kopell’s experience. He remarked, “We became the second family to each other,” emphasizing the strong bonds forged over the years.
