Berlinale Moves 2027 Dates for More Public Screenings Amid Record Ticket Sales
Berlin Film Festival Announces New Dates for 2027 Edition
The 77th Berlin Film Festival is set to take place from February 10 to 21, 2027. In a notable change from tradition, the festival will commence on a Wednesday, rather than the usual Thursday.
This adjustment also alters the schedule for the Official Awards Ceremony, which will now occur on the second Friday, February 19, instead of Saturday.
The announcement follows the highly publicized 76th edition, which faced controversy after jury president Wim Wenders remarked that filmmakers should “stay out of politics” in response to a question regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict. Additional turbulence arose due to a political backlash against pro-Palestinian speeches delivered during the closing ceremony. The festival also nearly experienced the departure of Festival Director Tricia Tuttle amid these events.
Despite the controversies, public interest remained strong, with festival organizers revealing that this year’s lineup featured 278 films from 80 countries, generating a record 343,200 ticket sales—an increase from 340,000 in 2025.
The festival noted that the change in start date would allow for the introduction of the inaugural Audience Days (Berlinale Publikumstage) on February 20 and 21, 2027. “Berlinale’s not-so-secret weapon is our wonderful audience; this change allows us to better serve them, while also responding to increasing demand from attendees at our highly successful European Film Market,” Tuttle stated. “We are already planning for the 77th Berlinale with much excitement.”
Regarding industry events, the European Film Market (EFM) will now include an official opening day on Wednesday, February 10, with a reception on the evening of Tuesday, February 9. The event will continue until the following Tuesday, February 16. Berlinale Talents is scheduled from February 12 to 17, and the Berlinale Co-Production Market will take place from February 13 to 16, continuing practices established in 2026.
This year’s festival attracted approximately 19,500 industry professionals from 135 countries, including 2,288 accredited press representatives, as confirmed in reports released on Tuesday.
