Beloved Bollywood Singer Asha Bhosle Passes Away at 92
Asha Bhosle, a distinguished Bollywood singer known for her versatility and profound impact on India’s musical landscape, has passed away at the age of 92. She died on April 12 from multiple organ failure at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, as confirmed by Dr. Pratit Samdani. Her son, Anand Bhosle, announced that her final rites will be held on Monday.
Admitted to the hospital late Saturday due to a chest infection and exhaustion, Asha was a beloved figure whose career spanned nearly eight decades. Her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, shared the news of her hospitalization on social media.
With a remarkable body of work that includes around 12,000 songs, Asha’s voice became synonymous with Indian cinema. She defied conventions by embracing cabaret and Western-inspired music, carving out a unique identity that set her apart from her sister, the revered Lata Mangeshkar, known as the “Melody Queen.”
The news of Asha’s passing has elicited widespread sorrow. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief on social media, stating, “I am deeply saddened” by her death. He noted that her extraordinary musical journey has enriched India’s cultural heritage, praising the timelessness of her voice that touched the hearts of many around the world.
Born on September 8, 1933, Asha was introduced to music by her father, Dinanath Mangeshkar, a trained singer. She and her four siblings all achieved prominence in the world of music. Asha’s first marriage, in 1949, ended in separation in 1960, and she later married the celebrated music composer R.D. Burman in 1980. Asha Bhosle is survived by her son and grandchildren.
