Bear Spotted Wandering Through Fillmore Neighborhood
Giant Bear Spotted in Fillmore Neighborhood, Calif.
VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. — Residents of a quiet Fillmore neighborhood were taken by surprise Wednesday afternoon when a large bear was spotted roaming through several backyards before it was tranquilized by authorities.
The unusual sighting drew a crowd of curious onlookers, many of whom expressed astonishment, noting they had never encountered a bear in their community before. “I was surprised, a once-in-a-lifetime thing to see in your backyard,” said 12-year-old Ocean Holguin. “We were just shocked; we’ve never seen anything like this in Fillmore, California,” another resident remarked.
As the bear made its way near Edison Lane, it became a focal point for locals. “We see possums, raccoons—not a bear, a 500-pound bear,” said Daniel Holguin, Ocean’s uncle. Despite the bear’s presence, the pair remained calm, with Ocean recalling that when his uncle first mentioned the bear, he was skeptical until he saw it for himself.
In response to the bear’s unusual appearance, the City of Fillmore issued warnings advising residents to maintain a safe distance. Local officials had previously alerted the community to avoid areas along 4th Street, where the bear was initially observed.
By the afternoon, crews from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, in collaboration with local law enforcement, successfully tranquilized the bear and relocated it safely. “A lot of support for the bear. You know, we all love animals; we’re just happy they took it away safely,” Daniel Holguin added.
Residents agreed that sightings of bears in Fillmore are exceedingly rare, making this incident a memorable event for the community.
