BBC Continues With ‘Race Across The World’ Spin-Off After Presenter Scott Mills’ Departure
BBC to Proceed with ‘Race Across the World’ Spin-Off Following Scott Mills’ Dismissal
The BBC is forging ahead with a spin-off of its popular series Race Across the World, despite recent upheaval surrounding its intended host, Scott Mills. Mills was set to lead the new companion vodcast, Race Across the World: The Detour, but his departure from the network has led to a search for a new presenter.
Mills, who was the host of BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast Show, was dismissed over the weekend. Reports indicate that he was previously questioned in 2018 regarding serious and historic sexual offences against a teenage boy dating back to the late 1990s; however, the case was closed due to insufficient evidence. The BBC has not disclosed specifics regarding his departure, stating only that his contract has been “terminated.”
In 2024, Mills won Celebrity Race Across the World alongside his husband Sam Vaughan. The upcoming vodcast, akin to The Traitors: Uncloaked, was poised to feature insights and travel tips from season four winner Alfie Watts. With Mills no longer involved, the BBC may consider drawing on past contestants to fill the hosting role.
Race Across the World, along with its celebrity counterpart, is celebrated for presenting duos competing across various regions on a limited budget without using air travel. The Detour vodcast was included in the BBC’s vodcast slate announced on March 12.
The entertainment industry has reacted strongly to Mills’ unexpected sacking, leaving colleagues and listeners in shock. Mills, 53, took over the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show from Zoe Ball last year. He had previously hosted the Scott Mills Show on BBC Radio 1 for nearly two decades and was one of the most recognizable voices on BBC radio, earning approximately £360,000 ($476,000) last year. His dismissal adds to a growing list of controversies involving current and former BBC figures, including Gregg Wallace and Russell Brand.
The situation continues to develop, and inquiries have been made with Mills’ agent regarding the allegations.
