Austin Beutner’s Daughter Passes Away at 22: A Heartfelt Tribute
Los Angeles Mourns the Loss of Emily Beutner
LOS ANGELES – The city is in mourning following the unexpected death of Emily Beutner, the 22-year-old daughter of mayoral candidate and former Los Angeles Unified School District superintendent, Austin Beutner. Emily passed away on January 6, 2026.
Emily Beutner was a student at Loyola Marymount University and the youngest of four siblings. Austin Beutner confirmed the tragic news in a statement on Wednesday, expressing his family’s profound grief. “My family has experienced the unimaginable loss of our beloved daughter. We ask for privacy and your prayers at this time,” he shared with the Los Angeles Times.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has classified the cause of death as deferred, indicating that results from ongoing toxicology tests are still pending. This status typically implies that initial autopsy findings were inconclusive and further analysis is necessary.
Local leaders have extended their condolences to the Beutner family during this traumatic time. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who faces Beutner in the upcoming election, conveyed her sympathies, stating, “There is no way to describe the depth of pain experienced by parents who have lost a child. My heart is broken for the Beutner family…I will hold them close in my heart, and I am ready to assist the family with whatever they might need.”
Austin Beutner has been a notable figure in Los Angeles, particularly for his leadership of LAUSD amid significant challenges, including the 2019 teacher strike and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the mayoral race unfolds, discussions have briefly shifted to support the family during their time of sorrow.
Currently, the Beutner family has not announced any public memorial services. Updates regarding Emily’s cause of death will be provided once the medical examiner’s office completes the necessary testing. Further information will be shared as it becomes available.
