Athenas Embrace the Joy of Music as They Prepare for Their Holiday Concert with a New Director
Athenas Choir Prepares for Annual Holiday Concert Under New Leadership
The Athenas, a 60-member women’s choir based in Los Angeles, is gearing up for its annual Holiday Concert, scheduled for Sunday, December 7. The event marks a significant moment for the choir as they welcome their new artistic director, Dr. Stephen Pu, who is facing the challenges of stage 4 stomach cancer.
Dr. Pu, a conductor, pianist, and singer with a doctorate in Musical Arts in conducting, has a diverse background in both music and medical studies. Despite his ongoing chemotherapy, he has committed to leading the choir, citing the therapeutic power of music in his recovery process. “It’s very experientially clear that making music — and especially singing and being with folks who are singing — supports my health,” he said.
Founded through the Los Angeles Athletic Club, the Athenas typically present two major concerts each year—one in June and another in December. Following the retirement of their previous artistic director, the choir posted a job listing on Facebook, prompting Dr. Pu to apply. He felt compelled to contribute despite his “debilitating condition.”
Since officially starting in September, Dr. Pu has taken on the responsibilities of conducting rehearsals, selecting music, and developing themes for performances. “We artistic directors often have a deep impact on the culture of an organization and how people are relating to one another,” he stated. “So I strive to maintain high artistic standards while supporting the community-based aspect of it.”
Dr. Pu’s journey with cancer began in 2022 when he underwent treatment for stage 2 gastric cancer, which had put him in remission for about a year and a half. However, symptoms re-emerged in October 2024, leading to the discovery that the cancer had returned. “I don’t have a stomach, and yet I have stomach cancer — which is kind of strange, isn’t it?” he reflected.
Despite his health challenges, Dr. Pu continues to lead weekly rehearsals as the choir prepares for its 25th annual holiday concert. This year’s program will include a blend of traditional and contemporary holiday music. “When I programmed this concert, I tried to cast a broad net and represent a wide variety of styles and time periods,” he explained.
Beverly Clarkson, a founding member of the Athenas, described Dr. Pu as an ideal choice for the role, commending his compassion, musical expertise, and ability to work across various genres. “Stephen brings joy, energy, and enthusiasm to our rehearsals,” Clarkson said. “He also interweaves a texture of grace and courage, and he demonstrates life in real time. I’m proud to sing with him.”
Operating from their location at the Los Angeles Athletic Club, the Athenas benefit from the club’s wellness facilities, which Dr. Pu credits as an asset to his health. Although his role is unpaid, he views it as an opportunity to contribute to the choir while enhancing his own well-being.
The significance of this year’s concert extends beyond music; it embodies a shared journey of resilience and support among the choir members. Dr. Pu remarked, “I think they’re embracing this challenge, they’re embracing this story, they’re embracing me, they’re embracing one another in a new way.”
The Athenas’ 25th annual holiday concert is set to take place on Sunday, December 7, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Ticket prices vary.
