Ashley Tisdale is prioritizing self-care during a challenging period involving her “toxic” mom group, a topic she recently addressed in a viral essay for The Cut.
In a series of Instagram Stories posted on January 13, Tisdale, 40, shared a selfie taken while enjoying a massage. “Unreal! @sarachase thank you for the best treat,” she captioned the image, adding, “Just a little massage and facial day.”
Additional slides depicted a serene spa environment featuring sunlight filtering through linen curtains, along with a bonsai tree and singing bowls typically used in meditation.
This spa day comes on the heels of Tisdale’s essay titled “Breaking Up With My Toxic Mom Group,” in which she discussed her experiences as a mother and her decision to leave the group. Previously, she had shared her feelings in a December blog post titled “You’re Allowed to Leave Your Mom Group.”
“When I became a mom, I craved connection almost as much as I craved sleep,” Tisdale reflected. “But here’s the thing nobody prepared me for: mom groups can turn toxic.” She elaborated on how the dynamics can shift to unkind behaviors, something she described from personal experience.

In her January essay, Tisdale kept the identities of the women from her former group anonymous, using her experience to emphasize that it is acceptable to step away from unhealthy relationships. “If a mom group consistently leaves you feeling hurt, drained, or left out, it’s not the mom group for you,” she advised. “Choosing to step away doesn’t make you mean or judgmental. It makes you honest with yourself.”
Following Tisdale’s publication, several individuals linked to the mom group have responded. Hilary Duff’s husband, Matthew Koma, criticized her essay in an Instagram post on January 6, labeling her as “The Most Self Obsessed Tone Deaf Person On Earth.” Duff was reportedly a member of the mom group referenced in Tisdale’s essay.

Meghan Trainor, another individual linked to the group, has repeatedly asserted her disconnection from the drama. Recently, she shared a TikTok video lip-syncing to a scene from Stranger Things that humorously highlighted her attempts to distance herself from the situation. In the accompanying caption, she expressed, “I swear I’m innocent.”
