Angels Struggle with Offense in Setback Against Padres
San Diego Padres Defeat Los Angeles Angels 2-1
In a tightly contested matchup on Sunday, the San Diego Padres edged out the Los Angeles Angels with a final score of 2-1. The victory was bolstered by key two-out RBIs from Xander Bogaerts and Bryce Johnson.
Bogaerts opened the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth inning, breaking a scoreless deadlock. Later, in the seventh inning, Johnson contributed another two-out RBI single, ensuring the Padres secured two wins out of three in the series. Johnson stood out with two hits, marking his first multihit game of the season.
On the pitching front, Michael King (3-1) delivered a stellar performance, allowing just one hit over five scoreless innings while striking out six and walking four. He worked diligently through high-pressure situations, as the Padres’ pitching staff, including Ron Marinaccio, Kyle Hart, Bradgley Rodriguez, and Mason Miller, collectively limited the Angels to a mere two hits.
Mason Miller secured his eighth save of the season, striking out two batters in a flawless ninth inning. He is now just one inning away from matching the Padres’ record for the longest scoreless streak, which stands at 33 2/3 innings, set by Cla Meredith in 2006.
The Angels attempted to rally late in the game, with Oswald Peraza doubling in the seventh inning and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Zach Neto. However, the team struggled significantly, going 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and striking out 11 times throughout the contest.
Walbert Ureña (0-2) made his Major League debut as a starter for the Angels, impressively striking out eight while allowing two runs over six-plus innings. He became the fourth pitcher in the franchise’s history to achieve at least eight strikeouts in his debut.
