Andy Muschietti Shares Exciting Plans for an ‘IT’ Supercut
As the Muschietti siblings prepare for another visit to Derry, the filmmakers behind It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019) plan to create a much-anticipated supercut of their two-part adaptation of Stephen King’s 1986 novel.
In a recent discussion, Barbara Muschietti cited "time" as the primary obstacle preventing the release of this combined version. Andy Muschietti had teased the supercut back in 2019, highlighting its potential to offer fans a more comprehensive experience.
“We didn’t have time to do it because we were involved in all kinds of projects,” Andy explained in an interview with SlashFilm. “The show had a priority over the supercut.”
Looking ahead, Andy noted the studio’s potential support for the supercut. “We’re in a moment now where we can definitely go to the studio and ask for support,” he said. “But we are sort of committed, like happily committed, to season 2 of Welcome to Derry. There are other movie projects in the mix as well. But we’re going to do it.”
The supercut, which Andy previously mentioned in 2019, is expected to exceed six hours and will include deleted scenes along with newly filmed sequences, as part of the early discussions with Warner Bros.
In a January statement, Andy elaborated on the project’s direction, indicating that the supercut might feature a different structure and include extra scenes that will flesh out the story.
HBO Max’s chief content officer, Casey Bloys, emphasized that there is no stagnation with the project. “Andy and Barbara are hard at work trying to come up with an idea for a story they’d want to tell for another season,” he said. Bloys acknowledged the challenge of working without a source text, stressing the importance of developing a compelling narrative that excites the creators.
Looking towards the future, Andy revealed plans for a three-season arc, each season revisiting Derry every 27 years to chronicle the events surrounding It’s attacks.
