Andrew Garfield Shares His Thoughts on Why Watching ‘Harry Potter’ Sparks Controversy
Andrew Garfield Reflects on Watching Harry Potter for the First Time
In a recent interview, actor Andrew Garfield shared that he has watched the Harry Potter films for the first time, acknowledging the controversy surrounding the franchise. His comments were made while promoting The Magic Faraway Tree.
Garfield discussed the potential rewards of engaging with the Harry Potter universe, referring to it as a matter that concerns “she that shall remain nameless.” Though he did not directly mention J.K. Rowling or the ongoing discussions surrounding transgender rights, his remarks hinted at her interventions on the topic.
“I hadn’t watched the Harry Potters until recently … and he’s [Daniel Radcliffe] really good in those Harry Potter movies. Those Harry Potter movies were really good," Garfield stated. He went on to express awareness of the controversies associated with supporting the franchise, remarking, “I know it’s like controversial. And like, we shouldn’t be — you know — putting money in the pocket of inhumane legislation right now through she that shall remain nameless. But the soul and the spirit of a lot of the essence of the themes of those films, and the kids are so good.”
Garfield’s allusion to “legislation” likely refers to Rowling’s financial contributions to For Women Scotland, a group involved in a legal challenge regarding the definition of "woman" in UK equality law, which recently led to a Supreme Court ruling affirming that the term refers to biological sex.
His comments emerged in conjunction with HBO’s release of materials for a new Harry Potter television series. Rowling expressed her excitement on social media, stating, “It’s going to be incredible. I’m so happy with it.”
In a related development, Rowling recently applauded the International Olympic Committee’s decision to ban transgender women from competing in women’s events. She remarked that the ruling signifies a return to fair sport for women and girls, while expressing her strong feelings about the controversy surrounding the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Through his comments, Garfield reflects the complex dynamics within the Harry Potter franchise, illustrating a balancing act of admiration for its narrative while grappling with the creator’s controversial stance on relevant social issues.
