Andrea Martin Reflects on Michael Constantine’s Impact
Andrea Martin recently shared insights into her time working on the My Big Fat Greek Wedding films, highlighting the significant role of her late co-star, Michael Constantine.
During an exclusive interview in New York City at the opening night of the Broadway production Bug on January 8, the 78-year-old actress, known for her portrayal of Aunt Voula, described Constantine’s presence on set as crucial to the film’s success.
“I’ll never forget Michael Constantine, who [played] the father,” Martin said. “He was really missed from the last movie. [He] was such a presence and held the movie together. So he was greatly missed.”
Constantine, who died in 2021 at the age of 94, was beloved for his role as Kostas "Gus" Portokalos, the family patriarch known for his fondness for Windex in both the original 2002 film and its sequel, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, released in 2016.
The upcoming third installment, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, pays homage to Constantine, with its storyline revolving around a family trip to Greece to honor his character’s last wish.
Original film creator Nia Vardalos expressed her deep respect for Constantine’s legacy, stating in an Instagram tribute after his passing, “He had told me he wouldn’t be able to join us for the third film and his wish was that we go on. I wrote the screenplay to reflect Michael’s decision and will always treasure his last messages to me.”
Vardalos concluded her tribute with heartfelt words, adding, “We miss you Michael, thank you for bringing my words to life with such passion and accuracy, you will always be with us.”
Martin’s reflections capture the enduring impact of both Constantine and the cherished film franchise.
