NEED TO KNOW
- Weapons actress Amy Madigan shares her excitement over her first Golden Globe nomination in 36 years.
- In the thriller, Madigan portrays the chilling Aunt Gladys, a character who has inspired numerous Halloween costumes and drag performances.
- Her last Golden Globe nomination was in January 1990 for her role in the TV movie Roe Vs. Wade, which she also won.
Weapons star Amy Madigan and her husband, actor Ed Harris, are reveling in the joy of her recent Golden Globe nomination—her first in nearly four decades.
“We’ve both been doing it a really long time, so we’re just both having a good giggle about it. We’re both enjoying it,” Madigan, 75, remarked shortly after the nominations were announced on Monday, December 8.
Madigan has received praise for her performance as Aunt Gladys in the thriller, a character shrouded in mystery and terror, playing a crucial role in the disappearance of 17 children from an otherwise peaceful suburban town.
This compelling performance has earned Madigan a nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role alongside Emily Blunt (The Smashing Machine), Elle Fanning (Sentimental Value), Ariana Grande (Wicked: For Good), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value), and Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another).

This marks Madigan’s return to the Golden Globe stage since she last won the award in January 1990 for her portrayal of Sarah Weddington in the film Roe Vs. Wade, which highlighted the battle for reproductive rights.
Reflecting on her nomination after such a long interval, she expressed gratitude: “I think really what it means is that if you get an opportunity to work on a wonderful script and it’s a great part, regardless of who you are, and where you live, and what age you are. If you’re an actor, you wait for those opportunities and moments, so it just feels great,” she said.

Madigan stated that she learned of her nomination unexpectedly when her phone rang in the morning, rather than through a live announcement. “My great manager, Sandra Chang, and my agent Christie Hall called up and just said, ‘Hey, congratulations.’ And that was at 5:30 sharp, I guess, or something. So, I started the day with that, which is really nice,” she recounted.
Notably, Aunt Gladys has sparked a wide array of Halloween costumes and drag performances, a phenomenon Madigan finds surprising. “I was not expecting that. I’ll be really honest with you. And what’s interesting about Gladys is that the gay community, and the drag community, and also the straight community — a lot of straight people, a lot of kids dressed up as Gladys too,” she noted. “So, she kind of has this universal appeal.”

“I would love for it to happen, but there’s a whole business side that I have nothing to do with. So, we’ll just have to see what happens,” she commented on the potential prequel.
In terms of personal celebration for her nomination, Madigan plans to take her dog for a long hike at the beach and connect with her family. “But it’s just kind of a normal day till there’s the next thing that I’m doing on the Weapons schedule,” she added.
The 83rd annual Golden Globe Awards are set to take place at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Sunday, January 11, at 8 p.m. ET, airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
