Amazon MGM Picks Up Chris McCoy’s Sports Film ‘Play By Play’ Starring Jake Gyllenhaal
Jake Gyllenhaal Partners with Chris McCoy on Upcoming Film Project
Jake Gyllenhaal is set to collaborate with screenwriter Chris McCoy on a new film, details of which remain undisclosed. Gyllenhaal will also serve as a producer through his Nine Stories production company, alongside Josh McLaughlin and Tom Brady of Religion of Sports, with Gotham Chopra also involved in the project.
This venture follows Gyllenhaal’s successful first-look deal with Amazon MGM, during which he starred in the 2024 remake of Road House, directed by Doug Liman. The film broke viewership records, amassing over 50 million viewers in its first two weekends on Prime Video. Gyllenhaal will reprise his role in an upcoming sequel directed by Ilya Naishuller and continues collaborating with the streamer on Honeymoon with Harry, a dramedy featuring Kevin Costner, as well as Code Black, a political thriller adapting a short story by Harrison Query that is currently in development.
Gyllenhaal’s recent performance in Apple’s Presumed Innocent, a murder mystery series, earned him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, solidifying its status as one of Apple’s most popular dramas to date. He is also an executive producer on the eagerly awaited second season of the series. In addition, audiences can look forward to his role in Warner Bros.’ The Bride, a gothic crime film inspired by Frankenstein, directed by his sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal. Other forthcoming projects include M. Night Shyamalan’s supernatural romantic thriller Remain, scheduled for release on October 23, and the Netflix action thriller Kill Switch, also written by Query.
Chris McCoy has an extensive background, having written for notable studios including Marvel, Disney, and Paramount. He has recently sold his spec script Hit the Gas to Paramount, with Neal H. Moritz and Tania Landau producing. A three-time Black List honoree, McCoy is represented by UTA, Gotham Group, and HJTH.
Religion of Sports, co-founded by Brady, has a reputation for producing sports and pop culture documentaries, including Built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues and Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story. The company continues to expand its portfolio with recent titles such as Glitter & Gold: Ice Dancing and Rise of the 49ers.
