Alison Brie Shares Her Excitement for Playing the Femme Fatale Evil-Lyn in ‘Masters of the Universe’
Alison Brie, known for her roles in Mad Men and Community, is stepping into the world of supervillains with her portrayal of Evil-Lyn in the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe. The film, directed by Travis Knight, is set to premiere in theaters on June 5.
Brie expressed her enthusiasm for the role, stating, “I was really excited to get to play a supervillain” in the Amazon MGM Studios film. She described her character as “a classic femme fatale with a sense of humor,” a departure from her previous work. “Just unlike anything I’ve ever really done,” she added in an interview with USA Today.
Reflecting on her career, Brie noted that much of her past work revolves around reality, making this role a unique challenge. “The whole point” of Masters of the Universe, she explained, is that “everybody is larger than life—some people physically, this character more just in her evilness. It was so fun to work on, and the cast is great.”
Brie also welcomed the opportunity to explore a new cinematic world after portraying more intimate roles, such as in last year’s Together, where she starred alongside her husband, Dave Franco. This new adventure marks a significant shift in her acting landscape.
Evil-Lyn, originally voiced by Linda Gary in the 1983-’85 animated series, is a character with a rich history. Meg Foster first portrayed her in the 1987 live-action film, creating a legacy that Brie is now continuing. The upcoming film, written by Chris Buttler and influenced by a draft from David Callaham and Aaron & Adam Nee, features a star-studded cast. This includes Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Camila Mendes as Teela, Jared Leto as Skeletor, and Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-at-Arms, among others.
The storyline follows 10-year-old Prince Adam, who lands on Earth in a spaceship and becomes separated from his magical Power Sword—his only connection to the realm of Eternia. Nearly two decades later, he embarks on a quest to reclaim it and return home to combat Skeletor’s dark forces. To defeat such a formidable enemy, Prince Adam must uncover the secrets of his past and embrace his destiny as He-Man, the most powerful man in the Universe.
