Alijah Arenas Faces Disappointment in USC’s Loss to Northwestern
Alijah Arenas Makes Long-Awaited College Debut Amid Setbacks
In a highly anticipated moment, Alijah Arenas made his college basketball debut on Wednesday night after a tumultuous journey that began with a serious car accident last April. The five-star freshman at USC had spent months recovering from injuries sustained when his Tesla Cybertruck collided with a tree, resulting in a six-day hospitalization. With aspirations of entering the NBA after just one season, Arenas faced significant challenges that cast doubt on his prospects.
As he took the court against Northwestern, Arenas immediately showcased his skill by navigating past a defender to score with a smooth finger roll. This moment encapsulated the talent that fans and coaches had eagerly awaited. However, the excitement quickly turned as Northwestern claimed a 74-68 victory, spoiling the night’s festivities for USC.
Arenas’ teammate Jordan Marsh stepped up to assist the Trojans, scoring an impressive 19 points in the second half alone. Despite this effort, USC struggled to mount a comeback in the game’s closing minutes while Northwestern’s senior forward Nick Martinelli led his team with 22 points.
In his debut, Arenas contributed eight points but faced difficulties, shooting just three of 15 from three-point range. He logged 29 minutes of play but required a brief pause to have his knee examined by trainers.
USC, which entered the game with three losses in its last five outings, had hoped Arenas’ return would boost their performance after a string of injuries had plagued the roster. Yet, despite his arrival, long-standing issues persisted. The Trojans’ free-throw shooting remained problematic, converting only 26 of 43 attempts during the game.
The loss marked a disappointing start to the Big Ten season for USC, which had anticipated the arrival of Arenas as a pivotal moment in their campaign. With echoes of an illustrious freshman debut five years ago from Evan Mobley, the current team instead faces the harsh reality of ongoing struggles.
What promised to be a turning point for the Trojans has turned into a sobering reminder of the challenges that lie ahead.
