Alice Oseman Shares Exciting News About the Heartstopper Movie Finale Release
Alice Oseman Shares Update on ‘Heartstopper’ Movie Finale at London Book Fair
Alice Oseman, the creator of the acclaimed young adult series Heartstopper, provided an update on the long-awaited movie finale during a session at the London Book Fair held at Kensington Olympia. Fans can expect the film, titled Heartstopper Forever, to release after the final book in the series, which is scheduled for publication on July 2.
Oseman addressed the profound influence Heartstopper has had across various platforms including television, social media, music, and literature, particularly in its commitment to LGBTQ+ representation. She reiterated her preference for the movie to be released following the novel’s debut, stating, "I want the novel to drop before Heartstopper Forever."
Filming for the movie, directed by Wash Westmoreland, concluded last July, and it is now advancing through post-production. "We are literally days away from it being finished," Oseman said. "We are doing the final little bits of VFX and animation, and hopefully by the end of next week it will be sent to be dubbed in various languages and quality-checked by Netflix, but my work on it will be done."
Heartstopper centers on the tender love story between British students Charlie Spring, portrayed by Joe Locke, and Nick Nelson, played by Kit Connor. This Netflix series, based on Oseman’s graphic novels, first premiered in 2022. While specific details regarding the movie’s plot remain under wraps, the summary of the final book hints at the challenges the characters face as they navigate their futures: “Everyone in school knows Nick and Charlie. Everyone knows they’re going to be together forever. But Charlie’s busy with his bid to become head boy. And while Nick is preparing to leave for uni, he’s starting to wonder who he’ll be… without Charlie.”
The Heartstopper series concluded its three-season run last year and remains popular among young adult dramas driving streaming viewership. Despite receiving critical acclaim, the third season experienced a 30% decline in ratings, prompting the decision to produce a film rather than pursue a fourth season.
Oseman, who has also authored Solitaire, Radio Silence, and I Was Born For This!, played a crucial role in the adaptation process. Reflecting on her journey, she recounted how she pitched the concept to Netflix alongside Patrick Walters, expressing the belief that there was "a gap in the market" for a YA series centered on a queer male couple.
Initially self-published after receiving funding through Kickstarter, the Heartstopper novels were later picked up by Hachette Children’s Group earlier this year. During her keynote interview at the London Book Fair, Oseman received an enthusiastic reception, honored as the event’s Creative of the Fair and awarded the YA Book Prize Special Achievement Award from industry publication The Bookseller.
The London Book Fair is set to continue through Thursday, March 12, before moving to the ExCel Centre in London next year.
