AI Doc Tackles Humanity’s Big Issues, Mall Witches Explore ‘Forbidden Fruits’ and More in This Weekend’s Indie Film Preview
Indie Film Offerings This Weekend Blend Humor, Darkness, and Literary Exploration
This weekend’s indie film landscape features a diverse range of offerings, including a deep dive into artificial intelligence, a campy coven comedy, and intriguing new narratives from acclaimed French directors Julia Ducournau and Sylvain Chomet. Among the highlights are the directorial debuts of Matthew Shear with Fantasy Life and Oscar Boyson with Our Hero, Balthazar.
Focus Features’ The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Daniel Roher and Charlie Tyrell, is making its debut in 782 theaters. Having garnered attention at both the Sundance and SXSW film festivals, the documentary joins the urgent global discourse surrounding the profound implications of artificial intelligence.
The film is produced by the team behind Everything Everywhere All at Once and Navalny, including Daniel Kwan, Jonathan Wang, Shane Boris, Diane Becker, and Ted Tremper.
Meanwhile, IFC Entertainment Group introduces Forbidden Fruits, a coven comedy directed by Meredith Alloway that opens in 1,562 theaters. Starring Lilly Reinhart as Apple, the film follows a group of witches running an upscale boutique called Free Eden in a mall. Apple, along with her accomplices Cherry and Fig, recruit Pumpkin to join their ranks, with each character symbolizing a different season of the retail cycle.
In an exploration of memory and legacy, the film depicts acclaimed playwright and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol in 1955, as he reclaims his childhood memories through a weekly column for Elle magazine. Despite facing self-doubt and the pressure of disappointing past works, Pagnol finds guidance from his younger self, Little Marcel.
Our Hero, Balthazar, making its debut at Regal Union Square in New York City, marks the feature directorial debut of Oscar Boyson. Known for his producer credits on films such as Uncut Gems and Frances Ha, Boyson has assembled a notable cast including Asa Butterfield and Jaeden Martell, along with Chris Bauer, Jennifer Ehle, Anna Baryshnikov, Noah Centineo, Becky Ann Baker, Avan Jogia, and Pippa Knowles.
This weekend’s selections reflect a rich tapestry of storytelling, highlighting both the fantastical and the deeply personal in cinema.
