The Kennedy Compound, a three-home estate located on six acres in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, has served as a central gathering place for the Kennedy family since the 1920s. This iconic property is featured in Episode 5 of FX’s Love Story, where John F. Kennedy Jr. introduces then-girlfriend Carolyn Bessette to his family during a dinner at the compound.
The estate has hosted numerous significant events, including weddings, Fourth of July celebrations, and served as a strategic base for John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign in 1960. According to the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, millionaire Joseph P. Kennedy and his wife Rose first established roots in the area in 1926, renting Malcolm Cottage and later purchasing the property, along with two neighboring lots.
J. Randy Taraborrelli, in his book The Kennedy Heirs, notes that the relationship between Bessette and family matriarch Ethel Kennedy was complex. “Ethel was tough,” he stated, highlighting her dual role as both a protector of Carolyn and a figure deeply connected to the family legacy.
The compound itself features three homes and expansive views of Nantucket Sound. In 1928, Joseph Kennedy bought Malcolm Cottage for $25,000, transforming it into a summer retreat and a place of political significance. The estate was dubbed the “Summer White House” by JFK, who considered it a personal sanctuary throughout his life.
The Kennedy family maintained their connection to the compound, with Joe and Rose living there until their deaths in 1969 and 1995, respectively. Over the years, the compound saw multiple expansions as the family grew, with siblings acquiring adjacent properties. In 2012, Malcolm Cottage was designated as an educational center for the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.
Historically, the Kennedy Compound became a hub for political activity during JFK’s presidential campaign in 1960. The estate took on added significance when the family gathered there to await election results, marking a pivotal moment in American history.
The main house boasts impressive amenities, including a home theater, a doll room filled with hundreds of dolls collected by Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel, as well as a wine cellar. This rich tapestry of family memories is part of why the compound remains not just a residence, but a symbol of the Kennedy legacy.
Notably, the compound has also drawn high-profile neighbors, including singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, who lived nearby from late 2012 to early 2013. Swift’s hit song “Starlight” draws inspiration from the lives of Ethel and Robert F. Kennedy.
The Kennedy Compound continues to be a cherished retreat for family gatherings and significant milestones. JFK and Jackie Kennedy took their engagement photos there in 1953, and more recently, RFK’s granddaughter Sarah Kennedy wed on the property in 2023. The family frequently comes together for events such as Fourth of July celebrations and memorial services, ensuring that the compound remains a vital part of the Kennedy heritage.
