A Look at the New Trailer for ‘Lord of the Flies’: A Complex Take on Adolescence in a Dystopian World
The much-anticipated trailer for Lord of the Flies, Netflix’s adaptation of William Golding’s 1954 novel, marks a chilling introduction to the series. It opens with the ominous line, “The sky is darkening and the beast is close at hand.”
The adaptation, crafted for television by Emmy Award winner Jack Thorne, follows a group of English schoolboys who find themselves stranded on a deserted island. In their struggle to maintain civility and order, led by Ralph (Winston Sawyers) and the intelligent Piggy (David McKenna), the boys face internal conflicts. Jack (Lox Pratt)’s defiance of Ralph’s leadership sets off a chain of events, leading the group from hope to tragedy.
The trailer reveals the chaos that ensues following a harrowing plane crash, which leaves the boys abandoned. A group of black-clad boys confronts the newcomers, asking, “Were you all on the plane?” to which Piggy answers, “We were. And now we’re trying to find out exactly where we are.” This moment marks the beginning of escalating turmoil.
