After a decade marked by over 1,000 tributes, British artist Chris Barker is concluding his ambitious Sgt. Pepper project. Since 2016, Barker has dedicated each December to assembling a montage of tributes to notable figures lost throughout the year, inspired by the iconic Beatles cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band from 1967.

This year’s tribute featured a record 245 names, ranging from notable figures like Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Reiner to quirky selections resonating primarily with British fans, such as Clodagh Rodgers, the Irish Eurovision singer from 1971.
“It was the night of the U.S. election. I was staying up late in the U.K. to watch America elect their first ever female president… or so I thought,” Barker recounted, reflecting on the origins of his project. “But then things took an unexpected turn. The commentators started to say things like ‘Florida is too close to call’ and I began thinking what a strange year it had been. I wanted to get my feelings about the year down on paper and for some reason it came out as a parody of the famous Beatles album cover. I posted it online and went to bed. When I woke up – on what coincidentally was my birthday – everything had changed. Trump was president, the world was in shock, I had a viral hit on my hands and the Washington Post was comparing me to Andy Warhol. Suffice to say it was big.”
Barker, however, never anticipated that the project would endure for a decade, culminating in a 100-page commemorative book that will be released to fans in early 2026.
What began as a personal reflection on a tumultuous 2016, marked by both Brexit and the deaths of music legends like Prince and David Bowie, transformed into a global dialogue about who belongs in the tribute. Barker maintains that it was never meant to be exhaustive, describing it as “just a personal take on things.”
This year’s montage features a diverse array of personalities, with Osbourne at the forefront, accompanied by boxing champion George Foreman, musician Sly Stone, and actors like Michael Madsen and Terence Stamp. The list also includes pop icons such as Brian Wilson and Robert Redford, along with notable figures from various sectors, including sports and politics.
The musical realm is prominently represented, featuring tributes to reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, as well as artists like D’Angelo, Angie Stone, and members of groups like KISS and The Band.
“I never intended to make it an annual thing. It was supposed to be a one-off,” Barker explained. “But every year people would beg me to do it again until it kind of became a routine. Everybody loves those end-of-year tributes to the stars we’ve lost over the course of a year.”
Across the montage, viewers will recognize a host of prominent figures from film, television, and beyond, including director David Lynch, comedian Ruth Buzzi, and even astronauts like Jim Lovell.
Ultimately, after a decade of heartfelt tributes, Barker reflects humorously on his journey, noting the increasing age of the icons he honors. After a notable year that saw Oasis reunite for a world stadium tour, Barker expressed a desire to step back before becoming part of the tribute himself.
