A Community Comes Together to Support Boy After His Adaptive Tricycle Is Stolen
Adaptive Tricycle Stolen from Boy in Los Feliz Sparks Community Response
In a distressing incident, a nine-year-old boy’s adaptive tricycle was stolen from his backyard in Los Feliz, cutting him off from a vital source of independence. Jack, who has Down syndrome and autism, relied on the tricycle to navigate his neighborhood.
The theft prompted an outpouring of support from the community. A local realtor, who had never met Jack’s family, established a GoFundMe page, which quickly gained traction. The fundraising campaign successfully raised more than enough money to replace the tricycle.
"I would have never set up a GoFundMe myself. I was overwhelmed that first day. Lots of emotions, you’re frustrated, a little sad. So I wouldn’t have thought to do that. He needed one because he was going to be so sad to not have his bike anymore. To have that help was really amazing," Jack’s mother, Marie Fields, said in an interview.
With the funds secured, Jack’s family plans to purchase a new tricycle as well as other adaptive tools to enhance his mobility. Additionally, their landlord has offered a secured area to store the new bike, ensuring it remains safe from future thefts.
The incident highlights both the vulnerability faced by families relying on adaptive equipment and the strong sense of community that can emerge in times of need.
