A Closer Look at Scarlett Johansson’s $400,000 Engagement Ring and Colin Jost’s Unique Purchase Story
- Scarlett Johansson wears an 11-carat light brown diamond engagement ring gifted by her husband, Colin Jost.
- The stunning piece is valued at approximately $400,000.
- In a surprising turn of events, Johansson once believed she had discarded the ring, prompting Jost to search 12 dumpsters across New York City in an effort to retrieve it.
Scarlett Johansson garnered attention in 2019 amid a whirlwind of celebrity engagements, standing out with her distinctive light-brown diamond ring from Colin Jost, a writer and comedian for Saturday Night Live.
The actress unveiled her one-of-a-kind ring at the San Diego Comic-Con while promoting Avengers: Endgame. Though media outlets pointed to James de Givenchy of Taffin as the designer, neither Johansson nor Jost has confirmed this attribution. Regardless, the ring’s 11-carat diamond is undeniably a remarkable piece.
The couple wed in October 2020, but their relationship almost faltered due to an awkward first date. In a December 2025 appearance on Today with Jenna & Friends, Johansson recounted the evening in 2017 when Jost asked her out. “We went to an Italian restaurant in the East Village. It was a lovely date,” she said. “Afterwards, he suggested grabbing a drink, but I panicked and felt the need to leave.” Johansson explained that she did not expect a second chance. “Later, he told me, ‘I totally thought that was it. You were acting so weird.'”
Despite the initial hiccup, the two continued their romance and ultimately embraced a future together. Below is a look at Johansson’s striking engagement ring from Jost.

Johansson’s engagement ring is striking in size, boasting an estimated 11-carat solitaire diamond. Town & Country suggested that it could be a Type IIa diamond, known for being among the rarest and purest available. The diamond is set in a black ceramic band, a hallmark of de Givenchy’s creations.
While colorful stones and bands are less traditional, they have found a place among celebrities. Others who have opted for unique gems include Eva Longoria with an 8-carat ruby, Anya Taylor-Joy with an emerald, and Penélope Cruz, who sports a blue sapphire.
In contrast, Johansson’s previous engagement rings from ex-husbands Ryan Reynolds and Romain Dauriac featured classic white diamonds.
Valued at approximately $400,000.
Colin Jost presented Johansson with a ring worth nearly half a million dollars, as reported by Harper’s Bazaar. Its substantial valuation is attributed to the rarity of high-quality natural diamonds of such size and clarity. A similar design by Taffin, speculated to be behind Johansson’s ring, notably appeared on their Instagram shortly after her Comic-Con debut.

During a 2019 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Johansson described Jost’s proposal as “romantic.” She humorously noted, “He killed it. He did a whole James Bond situation.” This nod to Jost’s role on Saturday Night Live hinted at the thought behind the proposal.
Pressed for more details, Johansson added, “It was very personal. It was a very special moment. And I think, more than anything, when someone tells you they want to share the rest of their life with you, that’s just a lovely, special thing.”
The couple’s wedding, held during the COVID-19 pandemic, was intimate. In a 2021 virtual appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Johansson reflected on the event, saying it was small yet “beautiful” and expressed gratitude for having loved ones present, despite the circumstances.
Johansson once lost the ring, prompting extensive search efforts by Jost.

In a humorous anecdote shared on Amazon’s Pop Culture Jeopardy!, Jost recounted the day Johansson misplaced her engagement ring, believing she had thrown it away. Rather than give up, he searched through 12 dumpsters near their NYC home in hopes of retrieving it. Much to his surprise, Johansson later found the ring safely tucked in her pocket. “It was a great day for me,” Jost quipped.
