Understanding Nick Reiner: The Son Involved in the Tragic Stabbings of Rob and Michele Reiner
Filmmaker Rob Reiner and Wife Found Dead; Son Arrested on Suspicion of Murder
OAKLAND, Calif. — In a shocking incident, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead at their Los Angeles home, prompting the arrest of their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner. Law enforcement officials confirmed that Nick was taken into custody on Sunday night following the incident, which is being investigated as a homicide.
Authorities reported that Nick Reiner was apprehended at the scene around 9:15 p.m. He is currently held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, with initial bail set at $4 million, though later jail records indicated he is being detained without bail. The investigation is being led by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division.
Nick Reiner, the youngest of Rob and Michele’s two sons, has publicly spoken about his struggles with addiction and homelessness. He collaborated with his father on the 2016 film "Being Charlie," a semi-autobiographical work exploring their relationship and Nick’s journey through treatment. By the age of 18, he had frequented nine treatment facilities.
“We didn’t go into it thinking this is going to be therapeutic or bring us closer, but it did come out that way,” Rob Reiner stated in a past interview. “It forced us to understand ourselves better than we had.”
At the time of the incident, the couple’s 28-year-old daughter, Romy, reportedly discovered their bodies, both of which showed signs of stab wounds. In addition to Nick and Romy, Rob Reiner has another son, Jake, who also appeared in "Being Charlie." Rob Reiner was also a father to Tracy Reiner from his first marriage to Penny Marshall. The family had recently appeared together at the Los Angeles premiere of "Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues."
Following the tragic news, President Donald Trump drew attention by attributing Rob Reiner’s killing to his outspoken criticisms of the president. In a social media post, Trump described Reiner as a "tortured and struggling" figure, making an unsubstantiated claim connecting his death to political tensions.
The Reiners’ deaths occur amid a troubling trend, marking the fifth recent case of patricide in Southern California. Recent incidents include the arrest of a Grammy-nominated singer’s son on murder charges and a separate case where a radiologist and his wife were allegedly shot by their son.
Authorities plan to present Nick Reiner’s case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday, December 16.
The investigation continues as the community grapples with the implications of this tragic event.
