Texas Migrant Smuggling Tragedy Linked to Container from California, Police Report
Six Migrants Found Dead in Shipping Container in Laredo, Texas
LONG BEACH, Calif. – A tragic incident involving human smuggling has come to light after the bodies of six migrants were discovered in a shipping container at a rail yard in Laredo, Texas. The container, which originated from California, became a fatal trap for the individuals, reportedly succumbing to extreme heat.
Authorities are scrutinizing the container’s transit history, seeking clarity on how a commercial freight route became entwined with a deadly smuggling operation.
Laredo Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez Jr. confirmed that the container departed from Long Beach and, after a two-day journey, reached Del Rio, Texas. It was there that six individuals from Mexico and Honduras were unlawfully locked inside.
Following its stop in Del Rio, the train made its way to the San Antonio area before arriving at the Union Pacific rail yard in Laredo on Sunday afternoon, where a railroad worker discovered the deceased. Initial reports indicate that five victims died of heatstroke, while one lost their life due to hyperthermia.
Dr. Corinne Stern, Webb County’s medical examiner, revealed that identification cards and cellphones were recovered from the scene. Fingerprints have been submitted to the U.S. Border Patrol’s Missing Alien Program for identification verification.
The investigation is being led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), in collaboration with the Texas Rangers and local law enforcement.
However, key details about the shipping container’s journey remain unclear. While investigators know its route from Long Beach to Del Rio, the complete travel history and any intermediary stops are still not accounted for. Additionally, it is unknown why the migrants could not escape the container as temperatures soared.
In a related discovery, a seventh body was found along the railroad tracks in Bexar County, approximately 150 miles north of Laredo. Authorities have yet to establish a connection between this individual and the victims found in the container.
Expressing condolences, a spokesperson for Union Pacific stated, "The company is saddened by this incident and is working closely with law enforcement to investigate."
As the investigation continues, federal agents are analyzing train route logistics, reviewing security footage, and tracking data from the shipping container’s origin in Long Beach to its various stops. The medical examiner’s office is also in the process of completing the remaining autopsies and coordinating notifications for the victims’ families with the Mexican consulate.
