Lewis Pullman Reflects on Not Meeting Mel Brooks After Wrapping ‘Spaceballs 2’: “His Spirit Was There”
Lewis Pullman Discusses Meeting Mel Brooks During ‘Spaceballs 2’ Production
Lewis Pullman, who stars in the anticipated sequel Spaceballs 2, has yet to meet the film’s legendary co-writer and director, Mel Brooks. After recently finishing filming, Pullman shared that Brooks, known for his classic comedy, did not make an appearance on set for this long-awaited sequel to the 1987 cult classic.
“He’s a homebody, but he was definitely part of it,” Pullman explained during an appearance on The View. “His spirit was there; he was part of the design of it. He launched us!”
Pullman expressed his excitement about receiving the role, particularly when he received a voice note from Brooks. “I still haven’t met him, but when he sent me the role, I got a voice note from him. I wish you could frame a voice note. I couldn’t believe it because I grew up watching that movie. That was one of my dad’s movies I was allowed to watch growing up, and I remember seeing Star Wars and I was like, ‘Why did they remake Spaceballs without all the jokes?’”
In conjunction with this development, MGM has confirmed that Brooks will reprise his iconic role as Yogurt, a parody of Yoda from Star Wars.
Originally released by MGM in 1987, Spaceballs is celebrated for its comedic send-up of the sci-fi genre, drawing inspiration from the Star Wars franchise and other classics such as 2001: A Space Odyssey. The narrative follows Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and President Skroob (Brooks) as they attempt to steal the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia, only to be thwarted by hero Lone Starr (Pullman), his sidekick Barf (John Candy), and Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga). Despite grossing over $38.1 million worldwide, the film has earned a lasting legacy as a cult classic.
