Roadside Attractions and Saban Films Pick Up Spider Horror Film ‘Crawlers’
Roadside Attractions and Saban Films Acquire U.S. Rights to ‘Crawlers’
Roadside Attractions and Saban Films have secured U.S. distribution rights to the horror-thriller Crawlers, directed by Angel Gómez Hernández and starring Matilda Lutz, known for her roles in Revenge, Magpie, and Rings. The film is set to hit theaters on October 2.
Written by Jayson Rothwell, whose previous works include Polar and Silent Night, Crawlers is the inaugural feature from Badlands, a new production company formed by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, noted for their contributions to the John Wick and Sicario franchises, along with longtime studio executive Scott Strauss, involved with the Resident Evil and Underworld series.
In Crawlers, Lutz plays Serena, a beleaguered manager of the Paradiso Palms apartment complex who uncovers a mysterious death. What initially seems like a viral outbreak rapidly escalates into a gruesome infestation of venomous spiders. As a quarantine traps the residents, they must fight for survival against a constantly multiplying threat. With her intimate knowledge of the building, Serena stands as their last hope, provided she confronts her deepest fears.
“We knew we wanted Crawlers the moment we saw it — it’s a viciously entertaining thrill ride, as fun as it is terrifying,” shared Roadside Attractions Co-Presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff.
Scott Strauss, President of Badlands Productions, added, “It is said we are never more than three feet from a spider. Now they’re coming to a theater near you! The filmmaking team is over the moon to partner with Roadside and Saban on the theatrical release of Crawlers.”
“Crawlers is a uniquely visceral horror experience that gets under your skin in the best way possible,” remarked Saban Films Co-Presidents Shanan Becker and Jonathan Saba. “It masterfully blends edge-of-your-seat thrills with the high-octane fun we’ve come to expect from the producers of John Wick.”
The film is produced by Badlands, Thunder Road, Altitude, Sagesse Productions, Fresco Film, and Renegade Capital, with Strauss along with Peter Welter, Rothwell, Iwanyk, Lee, Academy Award Nominee Alexandra Milchan, and Josh Weinstock as producers. Andrew Schwartzberg, Jon Shiffman, and Diarmaid McGrath serve as executive producers.
The distribution deal was arranged by Cohen and Saba, while CAA Media Finance negotiated on behalf of Badlands.
