Britney Spears Faces Misdemeanor DUI Charge in Ventura County
Britney Spears Faces Misdemeanor DUI Charge Following Arrest
Westlake Village, CA — Pop star Britney Spears was arrested on March 4 after law enforcement received a 911 call reporting an erratic driver on the 101 Freeway near Los Angeles. She now faces a misdemeanor DUI charge after being pulled over by California Highway Patrol officers.
Spears’ arraignment is set for Monday morning at the Ventura County Superior Court, although her presence is not mandatory due to the misdemeanor nature of the charge.
On the night of her arrest, Spears, 44, was driving a BMW 430i near Westlake Boulevard. Reports indicate that a concerned motorist called 911 after observing her erratic driving in the Newbury Park area. Following the report, CHP officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, guiding the car to the shoulder of the freeway.
Spears was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was subsequently released from custody.
In a statement released following the incident, a representative for the pop star expressed regret, calling the situation "unfortunate" and "completely inexcusable." They noted, "Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life." The statement added that Spears’ children would be spending time with her and that her loved ones would create a plan for her well-being.
Spears, who shares two children with ex-husband Kevin Federline, has been open about her challenges in the past. That morning, her Instagram account, known for frequent updates featuring dance videos, appeared to have been taken down. Following the arrest, she voluntarily checked into a treatment facility, although her representative did not provide further details about her decision.
This arrest comes roughly five years after Spears was released from a highly publicized conservatorship that limited her personal and financial autonomy. The conservatorship, lasting more than a decade, was established after her father, Jamie Spears, assumed control following a series of health crises she faced in the early 2000s. The pop star documented her experiences in her best-selling 2023 memoir, "The Woman In Me," detailing how her life was controlled by others.
Spears also became the focal point of the #FreeBritney movement, which advocated for her right to manage her own life. In response to the issues raised during her conservatorship battle, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation that restricts conservatorships granting legal guardianship over individuals.
A prominent figure in the music industry, Spears has been behind numerous iconic hits, such as "…Baby One More Time," “Oops!… I Did It Again,” and "Toxic," for which she won her first Grammy in 2004. Earlier this year, she also sold the rights to her music catalog, marking another significant step in her career.
