New Wildlife Crossing Over 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills Announces Opening Date
Los Angeles: Major Milestone in Wildlife Conservation Project Announced
The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing in Agoura Hills is moving closer to completion, with construction currently at 60%. Officials have set an opening date for December 2, 2026, marking a significant advancement in urban wildlife conservation efforts.
This expansive overpass, spanning ten lanes of the 101 Freeway, aims to reconnect the Santa Monica Mountains with the Simi Hills. Built to facilitate safe passage for local wildlife, it honors the legacy of mountain lion P-22, a symbol of conservation efforts in the area.
Robert Rock of Rock Design Associates confirmed the project’s progress, stating that 26 million pounds of concrete are being utilized in its construction, which began on Earth Day in 2022. An Indigenous-led nursery team has collected over 1.1 million seeds specific to the local ecosystem, ensuring the bridge will function as a living habitat. This habitat will support one acre of land featuring 5,000 native plants to attract mountain lions, bats, and deer.
While the crossing is intended exclusively for wildlife, officials plan to include a public viewing platform, allowing visitors to observe the project’s ecological impact.
Proponents assert that the crossing serves as a global example of how urban areas can effectively accommodate wildlife. “Drivers on the 101 will start to see the work when a lot of soil is brought in the fall,” Rock noted, highlighting the visual progress expected in the coming months.
As the construction continues, a section of Agoura Road will close temporarily, beginning Monday, April 27, until July 1. The closures will occur Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with no through traffic allowed in the area during work hours. Local motorists are advised to anticipate delays and utilize alternative routes.
A free shuttle service will operate every 30 minutes during work hours to assist pedestrians and cyclists navigating the closure.
