An eyewitness present during Andy Dick’s apparent overdose in Los Angeles on December 9 described the comedian as looking “blue” and thought he had “passed away.”
Shawn Harreol, who witnessed events unfold as emergency responders arrived, told PEOPLE, “His body was limp. It was like deadweight. It was blue. I thought he passed away.”
Harreol recounted he was near the scene, where he noticed a group with cameras, initially assuming they were filming a project. “That particular day, I was walking. I got down there. There was a group of guys down there and they had video cameras everywhere,” he said.

Initially unaware of the seriousness of the situation, Harreol first heard shouts of “Wake him up! Man, wake him up!” before recognizing something was amiss. “I thought it would probably be more than likely part of a movie,” he added.
As the chaos escalated, Harreol noted that Dick was initially slumped over. “When they finally started shaking him and doing all this stuff, he came [to],” he recalled while mentioning his difficulty in calling for help.

Harreol stated that paramedics arrived within minutes and administered Narcan, although he was uncertain if bystanders or police had initially provided assistance.
After regaining consciousness, Dick’s demeanor surprised Harreol. “Police [were] talking to him. I went over there and had a joke with him. I was like, ‘Hey man, they brought you back to life. You were gone for a minute.’ He’s like, ‘I know,’” Harreol noted, observing Dick’s calmness. “It seemed like he already had the experience before, to me.”
Harreol indicated that Dick’s skin tone was concerning, describing it as unlike anything he had ever seen: “He was blue. His hands [were] blue and his face was blue.” He estimated that it took between five to ten minutes for Dick to regain his composure after initially appearing lifeless.
While uncertain about Dick’s departure, Harreol mentioned, “I don’t know who he left with, but he left with somebody.” Earlier reports indicated that he was taken home by a friend after the incident.
According to a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson, emergency services responded to the intersection of Highland and Yucca at approximately 3:14 PM for a male subject. “But we did respond to that location for an overdose. He was not transported to the hospital,” the spokesperson stated.
The LAPD confirmed their response to a medical emergency but declined to comment further on the individual involved.
