Hugh Jackman Advocates for Skin Cancer Awareness After Multiple Diagnoses
Hugh Jackman has opened up about his personal struggles with skin cancer, underscoring the importance of sun protection and regular checkups. The 57-year-old actor discussed his experiences during a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show.
Jackman revealed that he has been diagnosed with skin cancer six times. “I’ve had like six skin cancers. There’s three types. Melanoma, the worst. Squamous cell, not great. I’ve only had basal cell,” he said. Basal cell carcinoma is recognized by the Skin Cancer Foundation as the most common form of skin cancer, resulting from "abnormal, uncontrolled growth of basal cells," and is usually treatable if caught early.
“No one has ever died in the history of the planet, but it’s a cancer and it grows,” he explained. “And if you don’t take it out, it’ll get into your bones and then you’ve got to take the bone out.”
Jackman noted that his doctor had warned him about the likelihood of further skin cancer diagnoses as he ages, attributing this to changes in his immune system. He emphasized the long-term nature of skin cancer, saying, “All skin cancer, all of it happens 25 years before the cancer comes. And he said it could be one time where you got burned really badly. Just one."
Reflecting on his youth in Australia, Jackman remarked, “Obviously, growing up in Australia, I always had a high risk. But everyone should get a check. It’s the most preventable cancer, I think, that is around.”
Jackman humorously recalled his mindset after his first diagnosis, admitting he still sought a tan despite the risks. “Even after the first one I had, I was like, ‘Ah, but it’d still be good to get a tan when I go away.’ I’m like, what was I thinking? You’re an idiot… Be the pasty skin guy. Who cares?” he laughed.
The actor’s candid revelations serve as a reminder for others to prioritize their skin health. Jackman first had basal cell carcinoma removed from his nose in 2013, after being urged by his ex-wife Deborra-Lee Furness to have a suspicious mark evaluated. A makeup artist also highlighted the spot during the filming of X-Men: Days of Future Past.
"It’s always a bit of a shock just hearing the word ‘cancer,’" Jackman said in 2015. “Being an Australian, it’s a very common thing. I never wore sunscreen growing up, so I was a prime candidate for it.” Since then, he has had multiple skin cancers removed, consistently scheduling checkups every three months.
