BBC and MGM+ Announce Casting for ‘Legacy of Spies’: Featuring ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ Star and Agnes O’Casey as Leads
The BBC and MGM+ have announced the casting of Dan Stevens as Bill Haydon in their highly anticipated adaptation of Legacy of Spies.
Joining Stevens in this John le Carré adaptation are Felix Kammerer, known for his role in All Quiet on the Western Front, and Agnes O’Casey, who portrays Liz Gold. Kammerer will play Hans-Dieter Mundt, while a talented ensemble cast also includes Volker Bruch, Saskia Rosendahl, Patrick Güldenberg, Safia Oakley-Green, Jake Dunn, and Ariyon Bakare.
Filming has commenced on Legacy of Spies, a significant production based on le Carré’s 1963 novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and the 2017 book A Legacy of Spies, which serves as both a prequel and sequel to the earlier works, including Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. This adaptation marks the return of George Smiley, a pivotal character in Cold War-era espionage narratives.
Stevens takes on the role of Haydon, a brilliant and enigmatic figure previously portrayed by Colin Firth in the Oscar-nominated film adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. O’Casey reprises her stage role as Liz Gold, an idealistic young woman central to the plot, while Kammerer portrays Mundt, a dangerous Stasi enforcer. Jake Dunn plays Peter Guillam, Smiley’s trusted lieutenant, and Safia Oakley-Green portrays Molly Gibson, a new intelligence officer closely working with the narrative’s protagonists.

From the perspective of the East German regime, Saskia Rosendahl plays Lotte Gamp, Doris’ protective sister. Patrick Güldenberg portrays Dr. Karl Riemeck, a principled doctor ensnared in espionage, while Volker Bruch takes on the role of Emmanuel Rapp, a high-ranking Stasi official.
Matthew Macfadyen leads the series as Smiley, with a notable cast that includes Daniel Brühl, Charlie Hunnam, and Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu, who plays Doris Quinz, an East German woman vital to the intelligence efforts.
The adaptation comes from The Ink Factory, with Fifth Season handling global sales. Stephen and Simon Cornwell, founders of The Ink Factory, expressed enthusiasm about the diverse cast, stating, “Both our British and our German cast bring unparalleled depth to the show, and to the realization of the rich canvas of characters that our dad created in his spell-binding novels.”
This eight-part thriller is crafted by showrunner and writer Stephen Cornwell, alongside Clarisa Ingram, with Michael Lennox serving as an executive producer and lead director. Legacy of Spies is set to premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, and on MGM+ in the U.S. The series is produced in collaboration with Amusement Park Film and in association with 127 Wall Productions and Paramount Television Studios.
Earlier this year, The Ink Factory achieved success with Season 2 of The Night Manager, another le Carré adaptation, which was aired on the BBC and Prime Video, with Season 3 already in the pipeline.
