Hydrogen Fuel Shortage Leads to Long Waits at Refueling Stations
Hydrogen Fuel Shortage Causes Long Lines at Stations in California
Drivers in California faced significant delays this week as a hydrogen fuel shortage forced many to endure hours-long waits to refuel. One Chevron station in Studio City reported wait times of up to three hours on Thursday night, highlighting the impact of a supply chain disruption affecting numerous stations across the state.
The hydrogen fuel cell partnership indicates that out of the 52 hydrogen stations in California, only nine are currently operational. Many drivers traveled considerable distances in search of fuel, only to find themselves caught in long lines. Aerial footage from NewsChopper4 revealed congested queues, with brake lights illuminating the roads as frustrated motorists waited for a chance to refuel. Some even resorted to activating their hazard lights for added caution.
"Right now, you can get fuel, but you’ll only get a small ration of it," said Dylan Visvikis, a driver caught in the lengthy wait. "You’ll get a very tiny portion. If you try to fill up more than that, you’ll just get a little drip."
The shortage has reached a point where some vehicles, running critically low on fuel, had to be pushed to the pumps. According to the hydrogen fuel cell partnership, this disruption in the gaseous hydrogen supply chain has been ongoing since February.
In response, higher-capacity liquid hydrogen stations are gradually coming back online, and hydrogen deliveries to the affected stations are reportedly being scheduled. Drivers owning fuel cell electric vehicles are advised to check their apps for updates on station availability.
