Tate McRae Discusses Relationship with The Kid LAROI
Pop star Tate McRae has opened up about the public’s perception of her relationship with Australian artist The Kid LAROI in a recent cover story for Rolling Stone. McRae, aged 22, described the experience as "overwhelming" and emphasized the challenges of navigating public scrutiny during her romance and subsequent breakup with LAROI.
“It was really scary and overwhelming,” McRae stated. “I would never talk that way, even about my friends’ lives. I didn’t realize how much it would affect me, the public knowing my private life — because no one knows the full story of anything, ever."
Her concerns extend beyond personal feelings; McRae expressed frustration over mischaracterizations of their situation. "I also hate people painting a situation that’s worse than it is," she remarked.
Despite these challenges, McRae maintains a realistic outlook on her career—as well as LAROI’s. “What I’ve had to realize is that he’s going to write songs and I’m going to write songs, and that’s our way of expressing ourselves. That’s our art, that’s our job. And once it’s out there, it’s not mine anymore,” she noted.

The cover story also revealed that McRae’s breakup with LAROI occurred in June. Following their split, McRae released "Tit for Tat," a track that fans speculate addresses LAROI’s song "A Cold Play," released around the same time. In LAROI’s song, he expresses a longing for resolution, while McRae’s response appears more unapologetic, stating, “Fix your f—–‘ self!"
Their relationship initially sparked rumors in January 2024 when McRae shared a mirror selfie on Instagram, to which LAROI responded with a sunglasses emoji. The couple was subsequently spotted together at various events, including a dinner date and the 2024 NHL All-Star Game in Toronto, where they were seen holding hands.
In April 2024, LAROI suggested their romance was official during a concert, stating that “his girlfriend” was present, with McRae watching from backstage. However, by July, LAROI hinted at their breakup through a social media post that suggested tension among his team.
In response to allegations directed at him regarding negative comments about McRae, LAROI denied any involvement, clarifying, "so y’all know I have NOTHING to do with this and I DO NOT co-sign this behavior whatsoever. working to get these removed."
McRae’s candid reflections on the challenges of public relationships resonate strongly as the couple navigates the complexities of personal and professional lives in the public eye.
