Trump Backs Steve Hilton for California Governor as CNN Lines Up Primary Debate
Former President Donald Trump endorsed Republican Steve Hilton for the California governorship on Monday, asserting that Hilton possesses the qualities needed to revitalize the state.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his long-standing respect for Hilton, stating, “I have known and respected Steve Hilton, who is running for Governor of California, for many years. He is a truly fine man, one who has watched as this once great State has gone to Hell. Gavin Newscum and the Democrats have done an absolutely horrendous job. People are fleeing, crime is increasing, and Taxes are the highest of any State in the Country, maybe the World. Steve can turn it around, before it is too late, and, as President, I will help him to do so! With Federal help, and a Great Governor, like Steve Hilton, California can be better than ever before! Steve Hilton has my COMPLETE & TOTAL ENDORSEMENT.”
Trump’s endorsement is likely to consolidate support for Hilton, potentially diminishing the campaign of Chad Bianco, the sheriff of Riverside County. Despite California’s longstanding Democratic dominance, this endorsement could influence the dynamics of the GOP race significantly.
Recent polls indicated that Hilton and Bianco were leading in the upcoming state’s open primary in June, ahead of a crowded field of Democratic candidates. The top two candidates, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the general election. Should Republicans unify behind Hilton, it may secure a position for at least one Democratic contender in the race.
Additionally, CNN has announced a gubernatorial debate scheduled for May 5, moderated by Elex Michaelson and Kaitlan Collins. Candidates must have raised at least $1 million for their campaign and must demonstrate a minimum of 3% support among primary voters in two polls, or an average of 3% in two qualifying polls according to network standards.
The two-hour debate will take place in the Los Angeles area.
Hilton previously hosted the Fox News show *The Next Revolution* from 2017 to 2023 and served as an adviser to former British Prime Minister David Cameron before relocating to California in 2012.
The last Republican governor of California was Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was elected in 2006.
