Kawhi Leonard Scores 24, But Clippers Fall Short Against Spurs
Spurs Extend Winning Streak with Victory Over Clippers
In a commanding performance, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 118-99 on Thursday night, marking their 11th consecutive win. De’Aaron Fox was a standout, scoring 22 points on nine-of-13 shooting, while the Spurs played without star rookie Victor Wembanyama.
Wembanyama was given a rest day following an impressive showing the previous night, where he tallied 41 points and 18 rebounds in a win against the Golden State Warriors.
The Spurs (59-18) demonstrated their depth, with six players reaching double figures in scoring. Notable contributions came from Stephon Castle, who added 20 points, and Dylan Harper, who chipped in 19 points off the bench.
This victory keeps the Spurs in the race for the top seed in the Western Conference, as they continue to close in on the Oklahoma City Thunder. Notably, San Antonio boasts a remarkable 27-2 record since February 1, including an 11-5 mark in games without Wembanyama.
The Clippers, on the other hand, find themselves in a precarious position. After a five-game winning streak, they suffered their second consecutive loss, falling to 39-38 on the season. Kawhi Leonard led Los Angeles with 24 points, extending his streak of 20-point games to 53. Bennedict Mathurin added 18 points, and John Collins scored 15.
Los Angeles fell to ninth place in the play-in tournament as Portland overtook them with a recent victory. In their matchup against the Spurs, the Clippers rallied in the third quarter, outscoring San Antonio 34-19 and narrowing the deficit to nine points by the start of the fourth. However, the Spurs quickly regained control, with Castle scoring eight of the ten points during a key stretch that extended their lead.
The Clippers will next face the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, as they aim to stabilize their position in the competitive Western Conference.
