James L. Brooks Honored with First Peabody Industry Icon Award
Three-time Academy Award winner and 21-time Emmy Award winner James L. Brooks will receive the inaugural Industry Icon Award at the 86th annual Peabody Awards ceremony this May.
"James L. Brooks has shaped the way we understand television as both an art form and a cultural force," said Jeffrey Jones, Executive Director of the Peabody Awards. "His work blends humor, humanity, and sharp social insight in ways that have influenced generations of storytellers. It’s an honor to recognize his extraordinary legacy with the inaugural Industry Icon Award."
Brooks achieved television icon status through co-creating notable series such as The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, The Simpsons, and the groundbreaking sitcom Room 222. He also developed two successful spin-offs from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rhoda and Lou Grant. Notably, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Lou Grant, and The Simpsons have all received Peabody Awards.
His film credits include acclaimed titles such as Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News, and As Good as It Gets.
The Peabody Awards ceremony is scheduled for May 31 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles. This year’s honorees include actress, producer, and podcast host Amy Poehler, who will receive the Career Achievement Award; director, producer, and screenwriter Sterlin Harjo, recipient of the Trailblazer Award; and the PBS Kids programming team, who will take home the Institutional Award.
The announcement regarding Brooks was made today by the Peabody’s Board of Jurors. The Industry Icon Award is presented to honor his "enduring impact and leadership in shaping the media landscape."
In 1986, Brooks founded Gracie Films, with The Tracey Ullman Show being the first produced series, which earned 29 Emmy nominations and 8 wins during its run. This platform also paved the way for the creation of The Simpsons, developed by Brooks and Sam Simon. Brooks co-produced and co-wrote The Simpsons Movie, released in 2007.
Nominees for the 2026 Peabody Awards will be revealed on April 7 and April 9, with winners to be announced later in the month.
