Niall Horan Shares Memories of Secret Service at One Direction Concerts for the Obamas
Niall Horan Reflects on Surreal Concert Experience with the Obamas
Niall Horan, the Irish singer and former member of One Direction, recently recounted an extraordinary moment from his boy band days when members of the Obama family attended one of their concerts, along with an extensive security detail.
In an interview on The Capital Evening Show With Jimmy Hill on March 31, Horan expressed his admiration for former First Lady Michelle Obama, mentioning that he had the opportunity to meet her multiple times. "You know I love Michelle Obama," he said. "Back in the 1D days, she would bring the girls [Malia and Sasha] to our show in D.C."
Horan described the atmosphere at their concerts, recalling, "It was a whole outfit. They had Secret Service there, and they were all over the arena." He noted the striking presence of security personnel, observing, “I would look out from the stage and just see Secret Service guys doing the whole thing. But she was lovely and obviously very smart and funny.”
During these concerts, the Obama daughters were able to enjoy the music just like any other teenage fans. One Direction performed in Washington, D.C., in 2013 during their Take Me Home Tour and again in 2014 as part of the Where We Are Tour.
Since disbanding in 2016, all five members of One Direction have pursued solo careers. Liam Payne continued to release music until his death in 2024, while Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik have new projects planned for this year.
Horan’s upcoming album, Dinner Party, is set to be released on June 5. He revealed that his long-term relationship with girlfriend Amelia Woolley played a significant role in the album’s inspiration, which is named after the dinner party where they first met. Reflecting on the experience, Horan stated, “I realized that that dinner party became a bigger thing than just sitting around, getting drunk and having a bit of food. It’s become the next six years of my life and hopefully the rest of it. So, yeah, it allowed me to then go and write songs that were about all of the moments of this said relationship.”
