Luka Doncic Faces One-Game Suspension Following 16th Technical Foul of the Season
Doncic Suspended Following 16th Technical Foul
NBA scoring leader Luka Doncic has received a one-game suspension after accumulating his 16th technical foul of the season. This penalty comes on the heels of the Los Angeles Lakers’ 116-99 victory over the Brooklyn Nets, where Doncic scored an impressive 41 points.
The incident that led to Doncic’s suspension occurred in the third quarter, when he was issued a double technical foul alongside Brooklyn’s Ziaire Williams. Tensions escalated as Williams celebrated a foul called against Doncic by vocally closing in on him. In response, Doncic attempted to push Williams’ arm away, which resulted in Williams swiping his hand across Doncic’s face.
“He was yelling in my face three times,” Doncic remarked. “I just wanted to get out of there. It’s a double tech, of course. What can I say? I didn’t even talk. I just wanted to get out of there. [The referee] said my push was exaggerated, which obviously was not. I don’t know what else to say.”
Following the incident, officials reviewed the footage before determining that both players deserved technical fouls.
The league confirmed the suspension through an official announcement, and unless Doncic’s technical foul is rescinded—a rare occurrence given that video review was involved—he is expected to miss the Lakers’ upcoming game against the Washington Wizards on Monday night.
Doncic is currently a strong MVP candidate, showcasing extraordinary talent with an NBA-leading average of 33.7 points per game. He ranks third in assists at 8.2 per game and holds the second slot for three-pointers made. Furthermore, he leads the league with 15 games scoring 40 points or more.
The young star has been on a scoring spree recently, marked by consecutive weeks as the Western Conference Player of the Week. His recent performance includes a remarkable 60-point game against Miami, where he received chants of “MVP!” from the crowd, following a 51-point showing against the Chicago Bulls.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick indicated that the team will likely appeal the suspension. “I didn’t see it happen,” he stated in response to the incident.
Doncic previously had a technical foul rescinded last week related to a verbal exchange with Orlando’s Goga Bitadze. The reason for that rescission was not disclosed, though Doncic claims it stemmed from an insult directed at his family, a claim that Bitadze has denied.
