Mao Padilha Shares Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s Insightful Approach to Fashion Show Seating Arrangements
Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, a former publicist for Calvin Klein, has left a lasting mark on the fashion industry with her keen intuition, according to Mauricio Padilha, co-founder of MAO Public Relations. Padilha reflects on their encounter at the designer’s showroom before he launched his own business, recalling how Bessette Kennedy took the time to explain her innovative method for arranging show seating.
“Carolyn saw me looking at her show seating charts, and she came over and sat with me to explain how she arranged a show,” Padilha shared. His admiration for her approach to fashion logistics further highlights the influence she had on her peers.
Padilha noted that Bessette Kennedy had a distinctive strategy for her seating charts. “Vogue never sits next to [Harper’s] Bazaar… Celebs sit together near cameras and not near press or stores in case they say something stupid,” he explained, mentioning her practical method of arranging guests. “When I asked her why the stickers [on the seating plan with guests’ names written on them] were bent up, she told me it was to make it easier to switch their seats in case someone more important RSVP’d.”
Bessette Kennedy, who was known for her contributions to the fashion industry, had chosen to step away from her role to focus on her marriage to John F. Kennedy Jr. His high school best friend, Sasha Chermayeff, mentioned that Bessette Kennedy had sacrificed her career for their relationship, stating, “she left her job basically because everything had to revolve around John and George magazine.”
Despite her departure from the industry, Padilha continued to utilize her seating chart techniques for many years after her exit. The last time he encountered Bessette Kennedy was at the Helmut Lang store in Soho, where she assisted him in choosing a gift for his brother. “I was buying [his brother and co-founder] Roger a birthday gift and she helped me pick out a cute Felix the Cat t-shirt for him. She thought it was funny,” Padilha recalled.
Tragically, Bessette Kennedy and JFK Jr. passed away in a plane crash in 1999. Their story, along with the intricacies of their 1990s romance, is being revisited in Ryan Murphy’s latest project, “Love Story.”
