Join the Spanglish Social Club: A Welcoming Space for Women in LA to Practice Spanish
Women in Los Angeles Form Community to Practice Spanish
In an effort to create a welcoming environment for women in Los Angeles to enhance their Spanish skills, the Spanglish Social Club has gained momentum since its inception. Founded by Kathryna Gonzalez, the group seeks to foster a judgment-free space where participants can confidently practice the language.
Gonzalez’s journey began when she moved from New York to Los Angeles in 2019, shortly before the pandemic. During this transition, she noticed that she was losing her proficiency in Spanish. "I had to find those spaces. They weren’t just there for me," she said. The need to reconnect with her roots and build a supportive community led her to establish the Spanglish Social Club in October 2025 through a TikTok video.
The club quickly attracted interest from other women in the area seeking similar connections. "I think the most important thing is to just put yourself out there and make new friendships and practice your Spanish," Gonzalez noted. "And be vulnerable, because we’re all learning, and it’s pretty fun when you do it with community."
The group engages its members with a variety of activities, including museum visits, hikes, and dance classes. In addition, Gonzalez organizes informal gatherings called “Cafecito y Chisme,” where attendees can converse freely over coffee. "All ladies, everyone’s very nice and friendly, and you can just practice and feel no pressure and feel no judgment," said member Natalie Serrano, who appreciates the supportive atmosphere.
For Allison Cronan, attending these events has been beneficial as she learns Spanish to communicate with her fiancé’s family from Argentina. "I’ve been taking some classes, but I find that practicing with people is the best way to learn," Cronan commented.
The Spanglish Social Club is not only for fluent speakers but serves as a resource for those eager to reconnect with their Hispanic heritage. Sabrina Quijano expressed her gratitude for being part of a community that reflects her aspirations. "I didn’t grow up speaking it and so I’ve been wanting to learn and practice," she shared.
To accommodate those unable to attend in person, the club also hosts virtual events featuring a Spanish tutor based in Buenos Aires. "We have a large mix of Latinas, but also women that just have an appreciation for the Hispanic and Latino culture, and they want to learn Spanish," Gonzalez remarked.
The Spanglish Social Club continues to grow, offering a unique avenue for women in Los Angeles to foster friendships while improving their language skills. The group can be followed on TikTok for updates about upcoming events.
