Halloween in Los Angeles: A Fun Blend of Phantoms, Burlesque, and Paranormal Events
Halloween Celebrations Ignite Arts Scene in Los Angeles
As Halloween approaches, Los Angeles is alive with a myriad of artistic expressions, captivating performances, and family-friendly festivities that embrace the spirit of the season. From spine-chilling ballets to vibrant celebrations of Dia de los Muertos, the city offers a diverse array of events for all ages.
Special Screening of The Phantom of the Opera
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the iconic silent film The Phantom of the Opera, first released in 1925. To commemorate this milestone, the LA Opera will screen the film on October 31 at the United Theater on Broadway. Accompanying the film, the orchestra will perform Roy Budd’s score live, conducted by Frank Strobel, an expert in film music. A previous screening on October 30 is already sold out, affirming the film’s enduring appeal.
LA Opera has established a tradition of celebrating classic horror films each Halloween, and Budd’s score, considered by many to be his finest work, enhances the film’s haunting atmosphere. After the screening, attendees will be welcomed to an after-party featuring themed drinks, a DJ, and a costume contest.
Premiere of Paranormal Inside
In a thrilling continuation of storytelling, East West Players is presenting Paranormal Inside, a sequel to Prince Gomolvilas’ earlier play The Brothers Paranormal. This production premiered on October 9 and will conclude this weekend with a special costume contest coinciding with the performance on Halloween.
The play reunites Max, a Thai American man anticipating fatherhood, and Delia, a Black businesswoman concealing her psychic abilities. Set five years after the first play, they confront supernatural challenges alongside their personal histories and trauma. Director Jeff Liu stated, “What a joy that three wonderful companies came together so we can go on another adventure with these bruised but funny souls,” emphasizing the depth this sequel adds to the characters’ journeys.
Paranormal Inside is co-commissioned by East West Players, Perseverance Theatre, and Theater Mu, and it marks the beginning of East West Players’ 60th anniversary season. Artistic Director Lily Tung Crystal remarked, “This play continues breaking barriers with an intercultural and intergenerational, pulse-pounding ghost story.”
American Contemporary Ballet’s Unique Performance
The American Contemporary Ballet is also embracing the Halloween spirit with two performances that shift focus from classical themes to more provocative choreography. Featuring Schubert’s Death and the Maiden alongside the ninth variation of their signature Burlesque series, these works will be performed with live music and opera singers, creating an experience steeped in mystery and allure. Scheduled for daily performances from October 30 to November 1, the show runs for 90 minutes and showcases the vision of artistic director Lincoln Jones.
Halloween Organ, Film, and Music Concert
On Halloween night, the LA Philharmonic will host a special concert titled Halloween Organ, Film and Music: The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Organist Chuck Wilson will provide live accompaniment to the 1923 silent film starring Lon Chaney, effectively bringing the haunting sounds of the organ to life. Wilson will perform on the Walt Disney Hall Concert Organ, a 6,134-pipe instrument which enhances the film’s eerie ambiance.
Upcoming Thriller: Paranormal Activity
For those looking to extend their Halloween festivities into November, the Ahmanson Theater will present Paranormal Activity, an original thriller inspired by the popular film franchise from November 13 to December 7.
18th Annual DTLA Halloween Festival for Kids
For families seeking engaging activities on Halloween, the DTLA Alliance is hosting the 18th Annual Halloween Festival for Kids at ASU Grand Hope Park from 5 to 8 p.m. on October 31. The event features a Trick-or-Treat trail, magic shows, craft stations, and carnival games, creating an exciting atmosphere for children and parents alike. Ticket prices are set at $13 for pre-sale and $15 at the door, covering all entry activities and festive food.
Los Angeles is showcasing a dynamic array of events that illustrate the rich cultural tapestry of the city while honoring the whimsy and spookiness of Halloween.
