Caltrans Alerts Drivers to Expect Significant Delays on the 405 Freeway at Sepulveda Pass This Weekend
Significant Lane Reductions on the 405 Freeway This Weekend
LOS ANGELES – Caltrans has issued a travel warning for southern California commuters as extensive construction begins on the 405 Freeway through the Sepulveda Pass. Starting Friday, March 20, at 10 p.m., significant lane reductions will span both directions until Monday at 5 a.m.
The northbound lanes will be restricted to three lanes between Getty Center Drive and Bel Air Crest Road, while southbound traffic will be funneled into three lanes from the Skirball Center Drive on-ramp to just north of the Getty Center Drive off-ramp. During this construction period, both the Getty Center Drive on- and off-ramps will be closed.
This lane reduction is part of a larger $143.7 million I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project aimed at enhancing roadway safety and mobility between Van Nuys and Westwood. Caltrans officials have stressed the importance of these improvements, recognizing the need to ensure the longevity of the roadway through the Sepulveda Pass.
Residents and businesses in the vicinity of the construction site may experience noise, vibration, and dust as a result of the ongoing work.
Timeline of Events:
- Friday, 10 p.m.: Lane reductions and Getty Center ramp closures commence.
- Saturday – Sunday: Continuous construction is expected, with heavy traffic congestion likely.
- Monday, 5 a.m.: All lanes and ramps are scheduled to reopen.
This weekend marks the beginning of 26 planned extended closures as part of the project. Caltrans encourages drivers to consider alternate routes, recommending Sepulveda Boulevard as a primary detour to mitigate travel delays.
As conditions may change for reasons such as weather or operational factors, commuters are advised to monitor real-time traffic updates before embarking on their journeys.
