Prince William and Kate Middleton Revisit RNLI Roots on the River Thames
In a touching return to their roots, Prince William and Kate Middleton recently embarked on a joint royal engagement aboard a Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) vessel on the River Thames. The outing marks a significant moment, evoking memories of their early days together.
Sydney Horsted, a lead lifeguard supervisor at the RNLI, shared insights about the couple during an interview with Hello!, noting that away from the public eye, they were “just a normal couple.” She described them as "completely down to earth" and emphasized their genuine engagement throughout the day.
This latest engagement recalls their first official outing in 2011, when they dedicated a new RNLI lifeboat named Hereford Endeavour in Anglesey, North Wales. At that time, shortly before their royal wedding, Kate famously christened the vessel by pouring champagne over it.
On March 12, over 15 years later, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge once again connected with RNLI staff, visiting the Tower Lifeboat Station to learn about the work of volunteers on the river. Horsted highlighted their playful demeanor, mentioning how the couple was seen sharing laughter and good spirits as they boarded an E-class lifeboat. They also surprised the crew with cakes and cookies from their morning excursion to Borough Market.
“They were just a normal couple, really happy,” Horsted remarked. “They were completely down to earth, really interested and really engaged in what we were doing. There was a lot of laughter and a lot of humor involved with the day.”
Horsted continued, stating that the couple appeared genuinely happy and eager to connect with those around them. A crowd eagerly awaited their arrival, and William and Kate were enthusiastic about meeting the well-wishers.
“They looked really happy—they were smiling and really enjoying it,” Horsted noted. “It’s really nice of them to come down and get involved and see what we’re doing from the lifeboat and lifeguard perspective. It was a really positive, nice day for everyone involved.”
In addition to greeting lifeboat crew members, the royal pair enjoyed tea and treats together, engaging in conversations that revealed their keen interest in RNLI operations. Horsted emphasized their support for the organization, stating that they asked questions and expressed interest in safety statistics and advice.
As the couple continues to strengthen their connection with the RNLI, their visit serves as a testament to their commitment to community engagement and support for vital lifesaving work along the River Thames.
